Week 3: Recap

September 3, 2021

This week we began Zoid Math with online sessions once a week. Zoid takes a different approach to math by focusing on complex topics to build engagement in an exploratory, hands on, manner. I expected the math would be at a comfortable level that allowed E to explore math in a fun way. But, the first class was focused on partitioning numbers which in reality is a lot of computation. It was clear that E felt overwhelmed by this math experience alongside 10 other students online. We will adjust our plans for approaching Math next week but E waits for no one. He knew he wanted something different so he created his own approach to Math complete with presentation and hands on problems.

In more joyful topics, we continued on the Rocks & Minerals deep dive by beginning a rock tumbling project as well as a crystal garden. But, perhaps most enjoyable of all, E was able to crack open several geodes himself.

To conclude the unit on Rocks & Minerals, E was asked to share his most fascinating new knowledge in whatever creative method he chose. He decided to leverage speech to text to create two posters and worked each day this week to refine his content until feeling complete on Thursday.

Make it stand out

As a source for this unit, E enjoyed Temple Grandin’s book and noted that “I know her, she’s the lady that thinks in pictures!”
